LAS CRUCES, NM – A 17-year-old senior at Mayfield High School was stabbed in the torso in an exchange with another student in one of his classes Oct. 31.

The victim was taken by helicopter to Thomason Hospital where his wound was treated.

The suspect, 15-year-old Adrian Nuncio, is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. Officials said Nuncio stabbed the victim with an X-Acto knife, commonly used for art projects.

Authorities stated that witness described the incident as an argument that turned violent. Nuncio and the victim were trash-talking and the topic of gangs was brought up. Then, the victim was stabbed.

Las Cruces Public Schools spokeswoman Jo Galvan said that the episode will be reviewed further.

Because the incident occurred in one classroom, officials deemed it unnecessary to issue a lockdown of the entire campus.
