Sacramento police shot a 19-year-old Sacramento State student after he allegedly beat his 23-year-old roommate to death.
Police arrived at the dorm after other students reported a disturbance on Oct. 21. Police then found Scott Gregory Hawkins bloody and beaten. He was later pronounced dead at UC Davis Medical Center. According to reports, Hawkins’ roommate Quran Jones told police he used a bat in the attack.
According to The Sacramento Bee, Jones was seen trashing his room and hitting himself with a bat before Hawkins even entered the room. Hawkins’ keycard showed he entered the room six minutes after a resident assistant reported hearing windows breaking in the suite.
When police responded to the call, Jones tried to attack the officers with a knife, according to news reports. Police initially shot him with a pepperball gun, but the agitated student allegedly kept coming toward the officers with the weapon, according to ABC News. At least one officer then shot the student.
Jones is listed as serious condition at UC Davis Medical Center. When released, he will face one charge of murder and one count of attempted murder of a police officer.
According to KSBW.com, some students and parents expressed concerns that a message regarding the incident was not sent to the campus community for more than two hours. University President Alexander Gonzalez defended the school’s decision, saying that after Jones’ arrest, there was no threat to the campus and no need for an immediate alert to be sent to students.
