An 18-year-old student at Hofstra University who said she was gang raped by five men on campus Sept. 12, admitted to prosecutors she was lying, according to newsday.com. Police had arrested and charged four out of five suspects in the case, including another Hofstra student.
The woman said the incident occurred around 3 a.m. on campus. She alleged she was dancing with one of the suspects at a party, when he snatched her cell phone from her waist. After repeatedly asking the suspect for her phone back, the suspect was not responsive. The woman then said she followed the suspect out of the party, where she followed him into a nearby dorm.
She then told police they forced her into a bathroom where they took turns raping her.
Hofstra student, Rondell Bedward, 21, and Jesus Ortiz, 19, were arraigned on five counts of first-degree rape charges Sept. 14. Additionally, Ortiz was facing grand larceny charges for allegedly stealing the victim’s cell phone.
Nineteen-year-old Stalin Felipe faced five counts of first-degree rape and first-degree attempted criminal sexual act. Kevin Taveras, 20, faced five counts of first-degree rape.
The New York prosecutor is considering pressing charges, according to USA Today.
