Student, 15, Alerts Campus Officials of Poor Security Policies, Charged with 3 Felonies

Published: October 27, 2008

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – A 15-year-old student at Shenedehowa Central School was arrested for computer trespass, unlawful possession of personal identification information and identity theft. This was a result of informing administrators that the school’s database was accessible to anyone with a district password, including staff and students.

The student, whose name has not been released, informed his principal through E-mail that he was able to access a database of 250 past and current transportation employees. The student remained anonymous through the message, but investigators were able to track the student down because he used a district computer.

The student has been in trouble before on unrelated computer mischief. In addition to the felony charges, he was suspended from school and faces a superintendent hearing. Investigators don’t believe the boy planned to breach the system for criminal purposes.
