SALT LAKE CITY – The stolen tapes containing billing information for an estimated 1.5 million patients of the University of Utah hospitals and clinics have been recovered, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
Originally, when the news was first reported, officials believed information for 2.2 million patients had been stolen; however, after eliminating patients who were deceased or were listed in the system multiple times, the number was lowered to 1.5 million.
The tapes were supposed to be stored in a Perpetual Storage unit. However, one worker did not immediately transport the information to the unit, and the information was stolen from his vehicle June 2. The tapes included Social Security numbers, birthdates and insurance providers for patients over the past 16 years.
There have been no arrests in the theft although a class action suit has been filed against Perpetual Storage for negligence. It is uncertain whether or not the thieves looked at the information.
