The IRS notified Emory Healthcare of a data theft after patient names, Social Security numbers and other information were used to file fraudulent income tax returns. No medical records were compromised in the theft.
Emory Healthcare has notified 2,400 patients of the theft, and another 77 patients whose information was stolen, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Emory will be providing identity theft protection to all the notified patients, whether or not their information was taken.
Emory spokesman Jeffry Molter told the news source that the theft was not a breach into the electronic medical records at Emory Healthcare. The patients who were affected are all from the Emory Clinic section of Orthopaedics at Emory Heathcare.
An investigation is ongoing.
