LULA, Ga. – Lula Elementary was locked after someone saw a man with a handgun walking behind the school Aug. 11, according to ABC News.
There was an hour-long standoff involving the suspect and an off-duty officer. The suspect pointed a gun at the officer and then fled the scene.
A SWAT team attempted to negotiate with 65-year-old Herbert Tate, who had barricaded himself in his home, and then tried to gas him out. However, Tate opened fire on the team, which resulted in the suspect’s death. Additionally, a deputy was shot; however, his injuries were not life threatening.
The lockdown on the 550 student school was lifted in the early afternoon. School officials said students were not told why the school was locked down, and everyone remained calm during the incident.
