WASHINGTON – The rise in sexual assaults on George Washington University’s campus have the University Police Department (UPD) urging students, faculty and staff to take more precautions.
Since Sept. 15, there have been eight sexual assaults reported to the UPD, with at least three occurring on campus.
Six cases were reported by campus administrators. Administrators file anonymous reports that exclude the name of the victim. Then, the victim determines whether or not she/he wants to report the incident.
The UPD noted that six of the eight cases reported involved alcohol. According to a crime alert, 98 percent of sexual assaults reported to the UPD and the university’s Sexual Assault Crisis Consultation Team in the past 15 years have involved alcohol.
