STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State has incurred almost $3.2 million in legal, consultant and public relations fees due to the child sex abuse case against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
The cost is expected to be recovered through insurance policies, the interest on a $60 million loan made to the Hershey Medical Center and athletic department payments related to the financing of a stadium expansion, The Inquirer reports. Tuition, taxpayer dollars or alumni donations will not be used, according to the university.
Included in the $3.2 million is $1.43 million for the school’s internal investigation.
In response to the scandal, the school has launched a new Web site in an effort to be more transparent in its dealings with the case and other matters. The new Web site is http://openness.psu.edu/.
Additionally, Penn State announced that it is strengthening its academic programs to combat the widespread and complex social problems of child sexual assault, abuse and neglect. It also is broadening the study and awareness of sexual assault to include victims of all ages.
