Nearly 30 school districts and institutions of higher education in Texas were forced to cancel classes on Friday due to damage from Thursday’s severe storms.

- Cy Fair ISD
- Spring Branch ISD
- Sheldon ISD
- Crosby ISD
- Galena Park ISD
- Waller ISD
- Aldine ISD
- Klein ISD
- Hempstead ISD
- Harmony Public Schools
- Spring ISD
- Channelview ISD
- Houston Community College
- Vet Tech Institute of Houston
- San Jacinto College
- Long Star College
- La Porte ISD
- Idea Public Schools
- Royal ISD
- Tomball ISD
- YES Prep Public Schools
- Kipp Schools
- Cleveland ISD
- Goose Creek ISD
- Arrow Academy
- Magnolia ISD
- Deer Park ISD
- Shepherd ISD
Additionally, Katy ISD and Conroe ISD announced that some of their schools canceled classes on Friday. Government offices in the Houston area were also closed.
At least four people were killed in the fierce storms that swept through Texas and Louisiana on Thursday, reports the Associated Press. Nearly one million homes and businesses lost power, and hundreds of windows in Houston office buildings and hotels were shattered.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire warned residents it wasn’t safe to go out and urged them to stay home on Friday unless they were essential workers.
