Senate Funds Byrne-JAG Program at $1.1 Billion

WASHINGTON – The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) is applauding the Senate for approving a measure that would restore critical funding to the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Program (Byrne-JAG). The legislation would fund the program at $1.1 billion until 2012.

“The Byrne-JAG Program has consistently provided valuable and critical resources to state, tribal, and local law enforcement agencies in their fight against drug abuse, crime, and violence. It has also helped to improve the criminal justice system,” said Joseph C. Carter, Chief of the MBTA and president of the IACP. “I am pleased that the Senate chose to build on the program’s successes by restoring this important funding and I am hopeful that the House of Representatives will follow the Senate’s lead and approve this measure as well.”

According to a statement released by the IACP, for more than a decade, the resources provided under the JAG program have allowed law enforcement agencies to expand their capabilities and make great strides in reducing the incidence of crime in communities across the nation. The JAG program provides crucial funding to assist states and local governments in controlling and preventing drug abuse, crime and violence, and in improving the functioning of the criminal justice system.

Since its inception, the Byrne Grant Program has proven itself an invaluable resource for cooperative federal, state, tribal, and local anti crime policing strategies, such as multi-jurisdictional drug task forces and DARE training. In addition, the close working relationship between law enforcement agencies that is fostered by the Byrne program is invaluable in law enforcement’s efforts to secure our communities and combat terrorism.
