NORWICH, Conn.—Security officers, switchboard operators and shuttle bus drivers for the William W. Backus Hospital will now be represented by the International Union, Security, Police & Fire Professionals of America.
The union, which is the first in the hospital’s 117-year history, was approved in 30-6 vote on Sept. 9, reports NorwichBulletin.com. Hospital administrators said they would not protest the vote.
The union, known as the SPFPA, will represent a small percentage of the hospital’s 1,800-employee work force. Last year, the same group of workers sought affiliation with the United Federal of Special Police and Security Officers. However, the union withdrew its election request because of resistance from Backus employees in other departments.
