Security Concerns Prompt Eastern Michigan U. to Re-key Faculty Offices

Published: July 1, 2007

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has decided to re-key the locks on more than 500 faculty offices in two buildings after a set of master keys went missing for nearly two years.

The school already re-keyed all interior and exterior doors in residence halls and the exterior doors of non-residence halls since the keys disappeared. A series of laptop thefts prompted the college to change the locks on office doors as well.

However, some union leaders do not feel the university is doing enough. Howard Bunsis, president of the professors’ union, believes all the faculty offices should be re-keyed to ensure a completely safe work environment.

EMU has also faced criticism for lax security after officials allegedly covered up the murder of student Laura Dickinson last December for more than two months.
