WASHINGTON – Schools all across the nation are contemplating whether or not they should remain open on Election Day, Nov. 4.
Many school officials have cited safety concerns as the reason why their students will not be in attendance that day. In Massachusetts, the decision stems from an incident that occurred Feb.5. During that incident, an elderly man, who was on his way to vote in the presidential primary, struck and critically injured an 8-year-old girl outside of an elementary school.
Some school officials have relocated the polls to other areas, including churches and other public places.
In Chicago, classes will neither be cancelled nor will the polls be relocated. Instead, officials are placing the polls in low-traffic areas around the campuses.
