NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — At least three Rutgers University basketball players have filed notices that they plan to sue the college over alleged abuse they suffered from former head coach Mike Rice. Former player Derrick Randall already filed a lawsuit against the university on Dec. 6.
Rice, 44, was terminated from his position in April after ESPN aired a video of him kicking and shoving players, throwing balls at them and calling them gay slurs. In his federal lawsuit, Randall accused the former coach of assault and battery and charged the university and the athletic staff with negligence, emotional distress and discrimination, NJ.com reports.
The university declined to give the names of the additional three players who plan to sue, although mentioned that the three did not fulfill some legal requirements needed for filing.
In response to the basketball scandal, Rutgers officials have set up a risk management system that warns top campus personnel about potential problems, NJ.com reports. The institution received the recommendation from law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, after the firm spent eight weeks reviewing events that led to Rice’s firing.
