Runaway Suspect in Custody After Fleeing Hospital

Published: October 27, 2010

ATLANTA — Police have recaptured an accused felon who escaped from Grady Memorial Hospital despite being shackled to his hospital bed.

Atlanta Police Department (APD) officers arrested 40-year-old Jerry Griffith on Oct. 22 for shoplifting at a gas station. While attempting to flee, the suspect fought with officers; however, authorities were able to capture the suspect after dousing him with pepper spray, reports WSBTV.com. Griffith was then taken to Grady Memorial for treatment.

The suspect had been shackled to his hospital bed, and was being monitored by a private contractor on behalf of the APD, while he waited to be transferred to jail. Griffith was left alone in his room Oct. 25 due to a security breach. During that time, he was able to escape his restraints. Griffith was recaptured on Oct. 27, and placed at the Fulton County Jail.

Officials are investigating how the security breach and the escape occurred.
