ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke County’s school board has voted to embark on school camera pilot program.
Several video surveillance devices costing $27,660 will be installed at entrances and blind spots at William Byrd Middle School.
If the program is deemed successful, other schools may also get cameras. Before expanded deployment, however, officials would determine on a case by case basis if surveillance systems were necessary.
According to the Roanoke Times, approximately a third of schools in Virginia have surveillance cameras installed. Almost all of the schools in Southwest Virginia already use cameras.
