MONTREAL, Quebec — A report on an incident in which riot police responded to a protest on the campus of McGill University has revealed that the police acted on their own initiative and were not deployed by campus security or the administration.
The report was commissioned after riot police used shields and pepper spray on Nov. 10 when protestors occupied the university’s administration building, the Montreal Gazette reports. Daniel Jutras, dean of law, who wrote the report, acknowledged the arrival of riot police constituted a safety risk. He noted that the university must develop a protocol for coping with protests on campus.
Some members of the university community have expressed dissatisfaction with the report, as it was not created by a party independent of the university.
