Report: Increased Security Hurts Florida Economy, Universities
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., According to a recent report released by Florida TaxWatch, a nonprofit organization that researches the state’s tax policies, the health of Florida’s economy and universities is at risk due to unintended consequences of national security policies and procedures imposed in reaction to the events of 9/11.
According to the report, exclusionary visa policies and practices have caused a substantial reduction in the number of foreign students attending the state’s schools. Foreign student enrollment in the state declined by almost 10 percent in the years 2001-2004. The report claims that because most foreign students pay the highest chargeable tuition rates and are required to take a full course load while enrolled, this decline hurts Florida’s overall bottom line.
