Report: 1 in 88 Children Diagnosed With Autism

Children were diagnosed with autism, Asperger syndrome and other related disorders 20 percent more from 2006 to 2008, according to a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Approximately one in 88 children were diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder by age eight in 2008, The New York Times reports. In 2006, it was about one in 110 children.

Researchers do not agree on whether the trend is the result of heightened awareness, an expanding definition of the disorders, an actual increase in cases or a combination of these factors.
