Quebec Medical Residents Boycott Training Duties

MONTREAL — Medical residents in Quebec stopped teaching in hospitals on Monday as part of a boycott that they claim will escalate into a strike unless a salary agreement is reached with the provincial government.

Residents usually spend 10 to 12 hours each week training medical students, the Montreal Gazette reports. Now, however, that time will be diverted to patient care.

Residents are negotiating 16-hour work shifts after an arbitrator ruled last month that scheduling residents to work 24 hour shifts violates the federal Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Negotiations are stalled, however, on the residents’ salaries, which are 37 percent below the Canadian average.
