Purse Ban at Indiana School Sparks Debate

Published: September 11, 2008

CEDAR LAKE, Ind. – A newly enforced ban on purses in the classroom at Hanover Central High School has upset female students and parents alike, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The school already has a ban on backpacks in the classroom. Parents believe that the new policy compromises a girl’s privacy, but the school maintains the ban is a security measure.

Principal Robert McRae said he enforced the new policy after he witnessed girls carrying around purses the size of backpacks at Hanover Central Middle School.

Students and parents believe the ban is really a concern about cell phone use in the classroom. Most parents agree with banning cell phones on campus, but they are concerned with locker security. Since girls will not be allowed to carry their purses to class, they will be forced to place them in their lockers.
