The University of Washington has postponed its decision to relocate a popular tent city after citing security and logistical concerns.
The proposal to relocate Tent City 3 to the school’s campus received unanimous support from the Faculty Senate in May, according to The Seattle Times.
Some students have been voicing concerns over the potential for increased campus crime and have campaigned to stop the move. However, student organizations, including the student government and the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, are in favor of the relocation.
Tent cities, which are operated by the Seattle Housing and Resource Effort and the Women’s Housing Equality and Enhancement League, provide shelter for the homeless population in Seattle. Moving the tent city to campus grounds would allow nearly 100 homeless people to stay on campus for a 30- to 90-day period, reports The Seattle Times.
