Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary said Tuesday freshman Jaylen Fryberg texted five classmates to meet him for lunch at Marysville-Pilchuck High Friday morning. In the cafeteria, Fryberg pulled out a hand gun, killing two students and wounding three others before he killed himself.
Zoe Galasso and Gia Soriano, both 14, died as a result of the shooting. Galasso died at the scene, while Soriano passed away at a local hospital Sunday.
Trenary also said the report that a first-year teacher attempted to stop the gunman wasn’t true, according to the Seattle Times.
The sheriff said the motive for the shooting isn’t known and the investigation could take months before it is completed. A .40 caliber Beretta handgun was owned by a relative of Fryberg and was legally purchased and registered. An investigation is ongoing to see how the 15-year-old obtained the gun.
Shaylee Chuckulnaskit, 14, is in critical condition at Providence Regional Medical Center, while Andrew Fryberg, 15, and Nate Hatch, 14, are at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. Fryberg is in the intensive-care unit, while Hatch’s condition has been upgraded to satisfactory. According to hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg, Hatch is awake and breathing on his own.
Classes have been cancelled at the high school this week.
