Police Search for Coastal Carolina U. Gunman

CONWAY, S.C. — Police are searching for a gunman who fatally shot a 19-year-old student at a residence hall at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) on Tuesday.

After shooting sophomore Anthony Liddell just before 7:30 p.m. at University Place, an apartment-style dormitory that houses nearly 2,000 students, the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. CCU Campus Police responded to the scene immediately, and school officials issued E-mail and text alerts about the incident and locked down residence halls overnight.

Officials noted that the incident was isolated and that there was not apparent threat to students, faculty or staff on campus, prompting classes to be scheduled as planned Wednesday.

In a statement on its Web site, CCU said:

The Coastal Carolina University community mourns the loss of sophomore student Anthony Darnell Liddell, who was killed in a shooting incident at University Place Tuesday evening.

CCU President David DeCenzo expressed his condolences, saying, ‘Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Anthony Liddell. Tragedies such as these anywhere in our society are senseless. Precious loss of life at such an early age affects us all. Our primary goal is to ensure the safety and security of our students. We will continue to do all that we can with all the resources necessary to make sure that our students are safe and secure. We only pray that an event like this never happens on our campus or any college campus again.’

CCU Counseling Services professionals and ministers are on hand Wednesday at CCU’s Lackey Chapel to provide assistance to students. Counseling staff are also available at the Grand Strand Activity House, located at University Place, and at Eaglin and Ingle residence halls.
