College Student Safety Tips is an important new book aimed at helping college students protect themselves from violent crime. Written by Tony Newsom, a Los Angeles Police Officer and student safety expert, the simple, easy to follow tips will empower students to protect themselves.
Tony Newsom says, “Every year over a half million college students become victims of violent crimes. Many students either lack awareness of on and off-campus crime or don’t know what to do to avoid becoming a victim of crime. These are the primary reasons why many students become victims.”
Out of 7.7 million U.S. College students, an average of 526,000 experience violent crimes such as: robbery, false imprisonment, kidnap, aggravated assault, domestic violence, rape and acquaintance rape according to the U.S. Department of Justice at www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/vvcs00.pdf. That is approximately 1,441 victims per day and 60 students per hour in America. Even the U.S. House of Representatives acknowledges the impact assaults have on the students and has designated September as National Campus Safety Awareness Month. State and National authorities are also reviewing safety measures on campuses like never before.
Newsom says, “Many crimes can be prevented through awareness and taking preventative measures. Due to a lack of legal knowledge and of practical schemes that many predators and perpetrators use, every year hundreds of thousands of our college students become victims of crime.” Newsom has nearly 30 years of effective, practical experience in keeping students safe.
As students return to college this year, Newsom has decided enough is enough. His new book, College Student Safety Tips provides a list of tips no student should be without. Through a series of crime stories told by police officers and candid interviews with convicted criminals, the book teaches students how to avoid becoming victims in a variety of on and off campus situations.
