Police Officer’s Comments Inspire International ‘Slut Walk’ Protests
TORONTO — A Toronto police officer who advised women at York University to avoid dressing like “sluts” as a way to prevent rape or assault has sparked international protest marches against this attitude, including a “Slut Walk” at Queen’s Park in Toronto.
Thousands of people participated in the Slut Walk on April 3, and similar events are scheduled to take place in Boston and London, CTV reports. Organizers of the Toronto event said that no one should be blamed for a rape or sexual assault, regardless of their clothing or how they act.
The event in Boston will also include workshops on the power of language, domestic violence and men’s roles in preventing rape and sexual assault.
Const. Michael Sanguinetti, the officer who made the comment that inspired the protests, was disciplined but remains on duty. A spokesperson for the Toronto Police said that Sanguinetti’s comments were unacceptable.
