GREENSBORO, N.C. – Police will not file their own charges against several Guilford College football players in connection with a recent racially fueled brawl with Palestinian students.
A college investigation was launched after six players were charged with misdemeanor assault, five with ethnic intimidation, by a magistrate judge. According to victims Faris Khader and Osama Sabbah, also of Guilford College, and Omar Awartani of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, the football players physically assaulted them the morning of Jan. 20. The alleged assailants are also accused of referring to the three students as “terrorists,” among other racial slurs, during the attack.
Prosecutors are awaiting the conclusion of the college’s investigation that includes a judicial hearing of all the students involved before deciding how to proceed.
