Police Investigate YouTube Videos and Suicide in Finland School Shooting

Published: November 8, 2007

Tuusula, Finland – The suicide note and the YouTube web-postings that were created by 18-year-old shooter Pekka-Eric Auvinen were analyzed by authorities Nov. 8.

Auvinen killed 8 people at Jokela High School, including six students, the school nurse and the principal. He then turned the gun on himself and died at a nearby hospital in Helsinki.

Officials stated that Auvinen randomly selected his victims. Detective Superintendent Tero Haapala described the assailant as a “lonely rider.” According to Haapala, Auvinen was bullied by other students; however, the motive behind the attack is still unclear.

In Auvinen’s suicide note, he said goodbye to his family and explained his disgust with society although he did not go into further details.

Investigators also found books and other printed information indicating that the attacker was planning a massacre. They also believe that the YouTube postings revealed plans for the attack. In one post, Auvinen states, “I am prepared to die for my cause. I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection.”

Police stated that Auvinen was a member of a gun club. On Oct. 19, he got a license for a .22-caliber Sic Sauer Mosquito pistol. He purchased the gun several days prior to the attack at a local gun store, as well as 500 rounds of ammunition.

Finland declared Nov. 8 a day of mourning.
