Police Investigate Student Death, Bag of Bombs Found at UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. – The main campus of the University of Central Florida (UCF) was closed Monday morning in response to a possible suicide in a dorm room. Police also found an assault weapon, handgun and a bag of explosives at the scene.

The incident started at 12:20 a.m. when a fire alarm was pulled in a seven-story residence hall (Tower 1). The authorities then received a 9-1-1 call about a man with a gun. When police arrived, they discovered the body of a male student who apparently had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They found a handgun, assault weapon and a bag of improvised explosive devices in the victim’s room, which he shared with three other roommates, reports Reuters.

Campus police, the FBI and the local bomb squad are currently investigating the incident, including who pulled the fire alarm, who made the 9-1-1 call and who provided the guns and bombs.

About 500 students were evacuated from the dorm as a result of the incident after 2 a.m. An emergency text message was sent to the campus community at 2:09 a.m. and then again at 2:46 a.m., reports Reuters.

The main campus reopened at noon, but the crime scene remains evacuated.

The Veterans Academic Resource Center near the UCF Arena opened at 7 a.m. for residents of Tower 1. Counseling services and food are available, along with places to rest. Students may report there until Tower 1 is reopened.
