Police: Doctor Killed Patients to Free Hospital Beds

CURITIBA, Paraná, Brazil — As many as eight Brazilian healthcare professionals have been charged for allegedly euthanizing seven patients to free up hospital beds in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The group’s ringleader, Virginia Helena Soares de Souza, recruited the doctors to administer lethal doses of anesthetics, sedatives and painkillers. Additionally, the group allegedly altered oxygen levels for patients, which led to deaths by asphyxiation, CNN reports.

The incidents took place between 2006 and 2013. De Souza has pleaded not guilty.
