Police Breakup Brawl Involving Nearly 600 LA High School Students

LOS ANGELES – As many as 600 students at Locke High School were involved in an on-campus melee May 9. Police were eventually able to restore order by using batons.

The brawl, which appears to have been gang related, started just after lunch when about 20 black and Latino students began to fight. The altercations then escalated into a full scale riot, overwhelming school officials.

According to the Los Angeles Times, ordinarily, there are two Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) officers and 14 security aides stationed at the school. After the fight escalated, however, about 60 additional LASPD officers, 50 Los Angeles Police Department officers and about a dozen patrol vehicles were brought in to restore order. Four students were arrested. Some individuals were injured, but no one was hospitalized.

The following week, parents and volunteers walked the school’s halls. Additionally, 20 conflict resolution experts were called in to talk with about 300 students.For additional information:
