EAST LANSING, Mich. — Police said Tuesday that an incident in which a Michigan State University student was attacked at an off-campus party by two men who asked if he was Jewish is probably not a hate crime.
The police department’s statement said the assault, in which Zach Tennen’s mouth was stapled, was “not likely a hate crime,” but it did not explain why the assault did not qualify as one, the Associated Press reports. The statement also said police have located two witnesses and identified a potential suspect.
Tennen was recovering Tuesday from jaw surgery resulting from the attack.
