PHILADELPHIA — Roughly 50 security guards at Philadelphia University held a demonstration last month, protesting low pay and irregular scheduling hours.
Last year, the university switched security contractors from Allied Barton to McGinn Security. As a result, guards were forced to take a $3 pay cut, with many only working a 10-hour week as opposed to a 40-hour week, Newsworks.org reports.
SEIU 32BJ, a service employee union, complained to the National Labor Relations Board that McGinn Security interfered with the group’s efforts to organize, claiming that the company banned its employees from talking to the media.
The protestors have received full support from City Councilmen Kenyatta Johnson and Bill Greenlee, Montgomery News reports.
