DENVER – A laptop computer possibly containing the names and Social Security numbers of more than 93,000 Metropolitan State College students was stolen Feb. 26.
The students who may have had their information exposed include those enrolled at the college from the fall semester of 1996 through the summer of 2005.
The computer was taken from the home of an admissions office employee. Metro State officials say, however, that the data on the computer may have been deleted before the theft occurred.
The college is in the process of notifying those whose information might have been breached, but officials say there is no indication that any of the data has been misused. A hotline and Web site has also been created to help students. Officials are urging those possibly affected to put a fraud alert on their credit reports.
