Pennsylvania House Approves Bill to Arm Campus Police

PITTSBURGH, The Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed legislation the week of Dec. 5 that would allow police at state-owned universities to carry firearms. House Bill 509 passed 149-43 and now moves to the Senate.

Currently, the decision to arm campus police lies with each of the presidents of the state-owned universities. Officers at four of the 14 campuses are not permitted to carry guns, although they receive firearms training, just like their municipal counterparts. On two of these campuses, however, police are permitted to use guns in emergencies.
