STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State president Rodney Erickson is seeking to lessen the importance of football at the university in the wake of the recent child sex abuse scandal, and instead focus on creating a “world class research institution.”
The scandal, Erickson said, should push universities to look at the role of big-time athletics and how they interact with higher education, USA Today reports. Joe Paterno, who was fired after the sex abuse scandal broke, will not have any input into who will be hired as the school’s next football coach.
On Tuesday, Erickson said Penn State is establishing a national Center for the Protection of Children to conduct research and provide treatment to sex abuse victims across the country.
