Patient’s Scuffle With Hospital Security Not Cause of Death
TOMS RIVER, N.J. —The Atlantic County prosecutor’s office will not file criminal charges against Monmouth Medical Center in the case of a man who died after an altercation with hospital security.
Darnell Myres, 43, was admitted in the hospital on April 27 to get stitches in his lip after a fight with his girlfriend. After determining that Myres was intoxicated, hospital officials asked him to put on a gown to reduce the chances that he would leave the hospital while drunk, according to NJ.com. However, Myres refused and fought with security officers and a nurse.
Myres was given a sedative to calm him down during the struggle and was restrained in a bed before he suffered a heart attack.
The prosecution said that Myres was not injured during the scuffle and that his pre-existing conditions including an enlarged heart, intoxication, obesity and the stress of physical resistance resulted in his death.
