TORONTO – The family of an 18-year-old freshman at Carleton University, whose body was found near the Rideau River April 20, are angry that the university did not share with them that the young woman was depressed.
According to her family, Nadia Kajouji was last seen March 9. A few days later, Kajouji was reported missing by police. On the very day she was pronounced missing, the family learned the student had been seeing a university counselor due to her mental state.
The family was told that Kajouji had been walking through the halls, threatening to cut herself with razor blades; furthermore, she was taking anti-depressants. Additionally, news reports said the student had been communicating via the Internet with a woman in the United States who allegedly advised Kajouji to commit suicide.
However, officials for the university said they did all they could to help Kajouji, as it is against policy to give out health information without the student’s consent.
