Parents, Students Sue to Lift Breast Cancer Bracelet Ban

Published: January 11, 2011

Pennsylvania — A federal court case concerning the banning of breast cancer awareness bracelets in some school districts will determine whether the First Amendment applies to students’ rights to wear the jewelry.

The bracelets say “I (heart symbol) boobies!” and have become controversial in several states. Two middle school students and their mothers are seeking to lift the ban, which was enforced by the Easton Area School District in October, according to USA Today.

The district claims the bracelets were distracting students from their lessons. The bracelets have also caused controversy in South Dakota, Colorado, Idaho, Florida and Wisconsin.

Proceeds from the bracelets go to the Keep A Breast Foundation based in California.
