STORRS, Conn. — The parents of a University of Connecticut (UConn) football player who was stabbed to death at a school dance are seeking $5 million in damages from the university.
UConn provided insufficient security and supervision at the 2009 dance on its campus, according to the family of Jasper Howard. The state’s claims commissioner, J. Paul Vance Jr., is considering the family’s request to file to the suit, which state lawyers said he should not allow, the Hartford Courant reports.
The state lawyers claim that UConn and its police took reasonable precautions, and that Howard initiated the altercation that led to his death.
Howard’s killer is currently serving an 18-year sentence.
