Overall Tenn. School Crimes Decrease, Assault and Fondling Increase
TENNESSEE — Crime in Tennessee’s schools decreased overall in 2010 compared to the previous year, but crimes against people increased, according to a study released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The study focused on K-12 public and private schools and excluded colleges and universities.
Law enforcement agencies reported 13,110 incidents in 2010, a decrease of 1.6 percent from the previous year, Knox News reports. However, in that same period, crimes against people rose from 6,293 in 2009 to 6,509 in 2010. The biggest increases were in simple assault and forcible fondling.
The incidents refer to anything that occurred on school grounds and may not be student related. More crimes took place on Fridays and more occurred between noon and 1 p.m.
