TULATIN, Ore. — As many as 25 fathers have volunteered at Horizon Christians Schools to help with security at the pre-kindergarten through eighth grade campus.
Started in January, the school’s Hawk EYES program is modeled after Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students), an initiative of the National Center for Fathering that incites fathers to help improve security in schools. The program allows the lone police officer monitoring the six-acre campus to have more assistance, The Oregonian reports.
All volunteers must undergo a background check. During an orientation, they receive schedules, two-way radios, keys to every campus door and a map of the school. Local police also train the fathers in self-defense.
