STILLWATER, Okla. – In response to numerous complaints from students, faculty and staff about the school not enforcing an Oklahoma statute prohibiting anyone from smoking within 25 feet of a public building, Oklahoma State University (OSU) campus police will now cease issuing warnings and begin issuing citations to any students caught violating the statute.
The first students to become casualties to the law were Panagiotis Kamenidis, 26, and Willie Williams III, 20, who were ticketed for smoking too close to the Student Union building.
OSU Police Captain Richard Atkins said that with media coverage and the signs posted all over campus, people should have no excuse for not complying with the law. A conviction of the misdemeanor charge carries a fine of $10 to $100.
