MCLOUD, Okla. — The McLoud school district and the city of McLoud will each spend $16,000 on security cameras for schools to enhance security on campuses. The grant was a 50/50 match for $64,000.
With the new cameras, police will be better able to secure campuses during the summer months when no one is around the buildings and parking lots, the News-Star reports. Police chief Gary Roe told the news source that police will also be able to monitor traffic and walking patterns more effectively.
According to Assistant School Superintendent Rob Griffin, the cameras will also help combat vandalism. In March of last year, the district experienced several break-ins on campuses. A number of things on the campuses were destroyed or stolen.
City Manager Larry Dillon said the cameras will also allow authorities to monitor the local splash park, a park behind the school and the football field.
Griffin, in a statement made at a city council meeting Thursday, said that the district hopes to start the project immediately. Officials will meet next week to discuss the new camera system.
