Ohio Patient Stabs Hospital Security Officer Multiple Times

The security officer is expected to recover from the attack.

A hospital security officer is in stable condition after being stabbed while transporting a patient in an Ohio hospital Feb. 16.

Andrew Wallace, 33, has been charged with felonious assault after stabbing an unarmed security officer in the neck and stomach at Summa St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, according to Cleveland.com.

The officer, Art Belcher Jr., was transported to Akron General Medical Center with life threatening injuries and underwent surgery late Tuesday night. Belcher is now listed in stable condition and is expected to recover.

Wallace was being escorted to the psychiatric ward of Summa St. Thomas when he attacked the officer in “an unprovoked incident” according to hospital spokesman Mike Bernstein.

Wallace reportedly had two knives hidden on him when he was brought to the hospital. The hospital and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration have opened investigations.

In 2014, Wallace was arrested for hiding a machete up his sleeve at a convenience store. He also had methamphetamines on him that day, although he has yet to be charged for that case.

Wallace is currently being held at Summit County Jail on $100,000 bond.
