COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State University played host to the first statewide campus safety summit on Aug. 1, opening its doors to 350 attendees representing 110 of Ohio’s colleges and universities.
The gathering came at the behest of a task force created shortly after the Virginia Tech shootings. Events included a speech by Governor Ted Strickland and seminars on communication technology, crisis communication, public safety, and legal and mental health issues.
Host Eric D. Fingerhut, the Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor, asked school officials to send him detailed outlines of their security plans. He intends on presenting his findings to the governor along with the task force’s recommendations on Aug. 30. Recommendations could include using state funds to bolster communications and help pay for law enforcement training.
