AUGUSTA, Ga. – Georgia Regents University (GRU) officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Saturday morning.
Around 2 a.m., Richmond County Sher¬iff’s deputies responded to a noise complaint stemming from a possible party at University Village, reports the Augusta Chronicle. When the officers arrived, people at the party fled the scene.
Police say GRU student Donte Stewart, 19, got into a vehicle and tried to his a deputy. The officer opened fire, hitting the suspect in the mouth and hand.
Stewart was taken to a local hospital but was not in critical condition. He is being charged with aggravated assault, and the officer is on paid administrative leave.
