Officer Kills Armed Patient Inside Hospital

OLYMPIA, Wash.

An armed man was shot and killed inside an Olympia, Wash.-based hospital on Aug. 15 after walking into the facility with three handguns.

According to The Seattle Times, Joseph Leonard Burkett, 43, was receiving treatment for a head injury when he became unruly with staff and wrestled with an officer before being shot. No other patients were in the room when the shooting occurred.

According to police, two of Burkett’s firearms were confiscated before the he underwent treatment. Upon his alleged outburst, Burkett revealed a third weapon. According to police and hospital officials, hospital staff did not indicate why the third weapon was not discovered in the initial search of the patient.

The hospital stations an unarmed security guard at the emergency-room entrance, according to a hospital official.

Burkett had been released from jail a day earlier. According to the news report, he was there on disorderly conduct charges.
