A woman is in police custody following an officer-involved shooting on a California college campus.
34-year-old Jullian Burdwell of Ontario was detained by a Chaffey College police officer early Tuesday morning in a campus parking lot. The police officer called for backup from the Rancho Cucamonga Police, says a press release from the department.
The Chaffey police officer approached Burdwell in her parked vehicle in a campus parking lot. Circumstances that are still unknown led to the officer firing his weapon. Burdwell fled the scene and a vehicle pursuit ensued.
The chase moved into city streets before leading back to the same parking lot. The officer feared Burdwell was aiming her vehicle in the direction of campus employees. He conducted a legal intervention maneuver, disabling Burdwell’s vehicle and taking her into custody.
A legal intervention maneuver, also known as a PIT maneuver, is a tactic in which a pursuing car can force a fleeing car to turn sideways, causing the driver to lose control.
Burdwell was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, felony evasion and obstructing an officer.
Burdwell was not hit by gunfire but was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. She is currently being held on $50,000 bail at the West Valley Detention Center.
According to ABC7, a Taser, baton, cell phone and purse were spotted near the suspect’s car. Employees were asked to avoid Lot 2.
“There is no threat to the campus as a result of this incident,” college officials tweeted. The campus was not locked down and no classes were in session.
According to the school’s website, Chaffey College Police Department is made up of nine sworn officers, who have the same training as non-campus police officers, and 18 non-sworn employees.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department are conducting an ongoing investigation.
